Criminology Submission Guidelines

Manuscripts should be submitted as Microsoft Word or PDF files. Manuscript submissions should be formatted in twelve-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins on all sides. Footnotes should be single-spaced and numbered serially.

The Criminology Section has no formal length requirements, but articles between 35-50 pages are preferred.

The first page of the manuscript should be anonymized to facilitate the peer review process.

Criminology manuscripts that use the Bluebook format are preferred; however, we will review Criminology submissions that utilize other citation formats. In that case, our editors will assist the author with the translation of citations into Bluebook format after an article has been accepted. All graphs, charts, and similar material should be submitted with the manuscript, either in text or in a separate file.

Criminology Peer Review Process

Criminology manuscripts are first reviewed by the Managing Criminology Editor in a “desk review.” We make every effort to ensure expedited desk review of Criminology manuscripts.

If the piece is selected by the editing team to enter peer review, the process generally takes 3-4 months, depending on the availability of peer reviewers, the uniqueness of the piece’s topic, and other factors.

Accepting an invitation from the Criminology branch of JCLC to move forward with the peer review process requires withdrawing submissions from other journals because of the lengthy and substantial review process that Criminology articles recieve. Other journals and other sections of JCLC are student-reviewed, rather than peer-reviewed, which accounts for the permissiveness of the submission process.
